Carol Y. (Mitchell) Buth

On Palm Sunday March 29th, 2026 Our mom earned her wings and went home to the Lord.

Carol Yvonne Mitchell Gray Buth was born January 16th, 1934. She was the daughter of Raymond “Pat” and Jennie Susco Mitchell. She was the sister to Barbara and Joan.

She grew up in Endicott, NY where she graduated from Union Endicott High School in June of 1951. At this time she went to work along side her dad in his ice cream store. She helped scoop homemade ice cream by the gallons. This is where she met our dad, Bob “Skinhead” Gray. They married in October of 1954 and mom moved to Indiana and lived here for the rest of her days.

They started out on Berry St. in Greencastle and then moved to Reelsville where she became a cook at Reelsville High School. She was famous for her homemade cinnamon rolls and as I was reminded recently of making the best peanut butter ever. She helped with the transition to South Putnam High School when it was opened.

Mom left there and moved to Indianapolis in 1970 and started her job as a receiving clerk for the Jewel Corp. at the turn style store and then for Osco Drug where she retired from in 1995 after 25 years of service. Nothing came in the back door of either store without Mom’s hand touching and counting it. She was very good at her job.

She met and married Bill Buth in 1983 they lived in Indianapolis for several years before coming back to live in Manhattan in 1999. Mom got to travel quite a bit and see a lot of the country.

Mom is survived by her children Jennifer and Mark, 6 grandchildren Ian (Gretchen) Seth (Shelly) Brianne (Steve) Brande (Jesse) Chanelle and Justin, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grand babies.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, our Dad, her second husband, and infant daughter and son, 3 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grand baby.

Mom gave us love, laughter, memories and pumpkin cookies. Our lives will be emptier without her. Rest Well Mom.
