William A. “Knobby” Knoll, 89, Cloverdale, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle.
He was born on August 4, 1920 in Connersville, Indiana and was the son of the late Henry Thomas and Edith Lorene [Kenney] Knoll.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lidiette F. [Fait] Knoll, sons, Stanley Andrew [Tina] Knoll, Mississippi and Thomas Michael [Sherry] Knoll, Indianapolis, adopted daughter, Kimberly Diane Knoll, Indianapolis, sister, Mary [John] Ruddell, St. Augustine, FL, 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He joined the US Navy during WW II, at age of 22, and served two and one-half years, most of them being deployed in the South Pacific. He was honorable discharged due to the injuries he had received. He worked at Naval Avionics in Indianapolis for a short time prior to founding his own drive-in-restaurants in Indianapolis named Knobby’s. They were located on 38th St. in front of the Coliseum, Keystone and 52nd St. [this location was in the family for 53 years, and Knobby’s Mai Tai, a Polynesian Restaurant at Shadeland and 38th St. His passion was to flying and he had owned seven airplanes.
He was a member of St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church at Greencastle. Private Entombment Services were held in Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis. Whitaker Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Catherine Knoll and sister, Catherine Lorene Knoll.
